Yoga

Regular practice of Yoga has the power to greatly enhance how we feel, both physically and mentally. It can take just one class to get an idea of its potential. Of course, it takes time and practice to really appreciate Yoga’s timeless appeal. However, the deep relaxation that is possible after stretching the body through its range of movements is appreciable very quickly. My yoga style comes from a perspective of prevention and remedy – that is, using Yoga to help maintain and improve flexibility while at the same time paying attention to areas of previous injury or regular problems.

Acupuncture

The option of traditional Chinese medicine – acupuncture and herbs – has offered people an alternative way to view and care for their health. It’s subtleties in diagnosis, give the practitioner a unique way to treat many conditions. In the case of insomnia, for example, three or four different TCM diagnoses are possible, depending on the person’s presenting details. The symptom – being unable to sleep – may be the same, but the cause behind the symptom, may be quite different and require a very different treatment plan. This is the beauty of its approach.

Herbal Medicine

The use of plant based herbs is one of the essential parts of TCM – traditional Chinese medicine. A stand -alone therapy in its own right, the prescribing of decoctions made from boiling herbs, is perhaps even older than acupuncture. A Chinese herbal prescription differs somewhat from the Western approach to using herbs. Principally, a Chinese formula is made up of several different herbs, each selected for its individual properties or actions. Combining various herbs allows for a lot of scope in the treatment of many different ailments.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a form of body work, done through the clothes, to help invigorate and relax. Working with the same meridians and points as in acupuncture, a shiatsu session involves the person lying on a comfortable mat on the floor. Gentle but firm hands-on pressure is given over the whole body, to improve the flow of energy (qi). The result is deeply relaxing. Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning finger pressure. It is a traditional form of therapy which grew out of the introduction of Chinese medical theory over centuries.
