Kara' is the Japanese word for empty while 'te' means hand. 'Do' translates as way or path. So Karate-Do can be interpreted as The Way of the Empty Hand. Karate itself is a weapon-less means of defence Karate is an Asian martial art involving blocking, kicking, punching and throwing techniques.




GRADING

Kata (Pre-arranged Movements) – A Kata is a set of pre-arranged movements which demonstrates blocking and striking against an imaginary opponent. There are 26 kata in the Shotokan system. Students are expected to learn a new one for each grading up to 1st Kyu level. Beginner kata is very simple and consists mainly of just one type of block and punch. Advanced kata is far more complicated and is made up of open handed strikes, different kicks and even jumping techniques.




THE RISING SUN CUP

The Rising Sun Cup is our annual championship which is a fundraising event to help raise much needed funds for local charities. The Rising Sun Cup is held yearly at St Anthonys Sports Hall, Ballinlough. The participant age ranges from 5-50years old and is one of the biggest events in the Rising Sun calendar.
